La Paz to Uyuni: Bus vs Flight — Which Is Better?
La Paz and Uyuni are about 550 kilometers apart, and almost every traveler heading to the salt flats has to solve the same puzzle: take the overnight bus, or fly? We organize this trip for our guests every week, so here is an honest comparison from our team in La Paz — with times, rough prices and the pros and cons of each option.
Quick answer
- Take the bus if you are on a budget, have flexible days and don't mind sleeping on the road.
- Fly if you are short on time, sleep badly on buses, or want to arrive rested for an early start on the salt flats.
- Combine both — many travelers take the bus one way and fly the other.
Option 1: Overnight bus from La Paz to Uyuni
How long does it take?
Most buses leave La Paz between 8 and 10 p.m. and arrive in Uyuni early the next morning, usually between 5:30 and 7:00 a.m. The trip usually takes around 8 to 10 hours, depending on the company and road conditions. That timing works well, because most Uyuni tours start around 10 or 11 a.m.
Tourist bus or local bus?
There are two kinds of service on this route:
- Tourist-class buses (for example Todo Turismo) offer semi-cama or cama seats that recline a lot, heating, blankets, a simple meal and an onboard toilet. They cost more, roughly US$40 to US$80 one way depending on the seat.
- Local companies are much cheaper, often US$15 to US$30, but comfort, heating and maintenance vary a lot.
Prices change during the year, so always confirm when you book.
Pros
- Much cheaper than flying.
- You save a night of accommodation.
- You arrive in time to start a tour the same morning.
Cons
- Long and tiring, and nights on the altiplano are very cold.
- Parts of the road are rough, especially in the south near Uyuni.
- If you don't sleep well, your first day on the salt flats will feel long.
Our safety tips for the bus
- Buy tickets at the official bus terminal or through a trusted agency.
- Choose tourist-class companies with good recent reviews.
- Keep your passport, cards and phone on you, not in the luggage hold.
- Bring a warm layer, water and snacks.
Option 2: Flying from La Paz to Uyuni
How long does it take?
The flight from El Alto International Airport (La Paz) to Uyuni takes about one hour. Boliviana de Aviación (BoA) operates the route, and schedules can change by season, so check current times before you plan your days.
How much does it cost?
One-way fares usually start at around US$100 and go up close to the travel date or in high season (July–August and the holidays). Booking a few weeks in advance helps.
Pros
- One hour instead of a full night.
- You arrive rested and can enjoy the whole day.
- Perfect for short trips — you can even see the Salar in a single day.
Cons
- More expensive than the bus.
- Limited daily flights, so seats sell out in high season.
- In the rainy season (roughly December to March), flights can be delayed or cancelled by weather. Always leave a buffer day before an international flight.
Option 3: Bus and train via Oruro
A slower but scenic alternative is to take a bus from La Paz to Oruro and then the train from Oruro to Uyuni across the altiplano. It takes longer and depends on train days, but some travelers love it. Check the current train schedule before planning around it.
Side-by-side comparison
- Travel time: bus 8–10 hours overnight · flight about 1 hour
- Approximate one-way cost: local bus US$15–30 · tourist bus US$40–80 · flight from about US$100
- Comfort: bus depends on the company · flight is the most comfortable
- Best for: bus for budget and flexible trips · flight for short trips and travelers who don't sleep on buses
Our recommendation
If you have more than a week in Bolivia and want to save money, the overnight tourist bus works well — especially on the way there, when you can start your tour the same morning. If your time is tight, flying is worth every boliviano: you gain a full day and arrive with energy.
A popular combination is to take the bus to Uyuni and fly back to La Paz after a multi-day tour, when you are tired and ready for a comfortable bed.
