Two days: Salar de Uyuni highlights then pink flamingo lagoons in the Andes. Private 4WD, English guide, overnight included. Book from Uyuni.
The Salar de Uyuni is just the beginning. South of the salt flat, the Bolivian altiplano transforms into a landscape of volcanic peaks, windswept deserts, and a series of high-altitude Andean lagoons inhabited by three species of wild flamingos. This two-day tour takes you through the full salt flat experience on Day 1, then ventures deep into the southern altiplano on Day 2, reaching lagoons at over 4,000 meters where pink flamingos feed in mineral-rich waters against a backdrop of snow-capped volcanoes.
Salt Flats Highlights
Depart Uyuni at 10:30 AM and begin your journey across the spectacular Uyuni Salt Flats. Visit the Train Graveyard and continue to Colchani village, where you can explore local salt miners’ workshops and browse traditional llama and alpaca fiber handicrafts.
Continue to Los Ojos de Agua Salada and visit the Salt Hotel Museum, before hiking through the unique landscape of Isla Incahuasi, famous for its giant cacti and panoramic views.
Enjoy lunch surrounded by the endless white expanse of the salt flat, followed by time to explore and take in the scenery. As the day comes to an end, watch the sunset over the salar before continuing to Ajencha town, where you will have dinner and spend the night.
Into the Flamingo Lagoons
Start the day early at 7:00 AM with breakfast before heading south into the dramatic Chiguana Desert, surrounded by towering volcanoes, including the still-active Ollagüe Volcano (5,840 m).
Continue along the rocky Pasito Tuntun road toward the spectacular Andean lagoons.
Laguna Cañapa
Your first flamingo encounter awaits. Hundreds of pink Andean flamingos can be seen feeding in the shallow mineral-rich waters, creating a striking contrast against the surrounding volcanic landscape.
Laguna Hedionda
Stop for lunch beside the lagoon and observe three species of flamingos: Chilean, Andean, and James’s flamingos.
Laguna Chiarcota
Continue to this beautiful high-altitude lagoon, home to a wider variety of Andean birds and wildlife. The scenery becomes increasingly volcanic and otherworldly as you travel through the Altiplano.
Finally, pass through San Cristóbal village, with a stop for chocolate, before returning to Uyuni at approximately 6:30 PM.
