Two days on the Salar de Uyuni: salt flat highlights, active volcano, Galaxy Cave & Devil’s Cave. Private 4WD, English guide. Book from Uyuni.
One day on the Salar de Uyuni is unforgettable. Two days reveal a completely different world. This tour begins with the classic highlights — the train graveyard, Colchani village, Isla Incahuasi, and a spectacular sunset — before taking you deeper on the second day into the geological wonders that most visitors never reach: an active volcano lookout, the otherworldly Galaxy Cave, and the ancient chullpar cemetery of Devil’s Cave. The route continues along the “Stone Animals” road and across the remote Campanitas Islands on the salt flat before returning to Uyuni.
Uyuni → Salt Flats → Ajencha
Depart Uyuni at 11:00 AM and begin your journey across the spectacular Uyuni Salt Flats. Start with a visit to the Train Graveyard, followed by Colchani village, where you can discover local salt miners’ workshops and traditional handicrafts made from salt and alpaca fiber.
Continue to Los Ojos de Agua Salada and the Salt Hotel Museum, before hiking across Isla Incahuasi, home to giant cacti and fascinating petrified coral rock formations.
Enjoy lunch surrounded by the endless white landscape of the salar. As the afternoon unfolds, watch the sunset over the salt flats before arriving in Ajencha town for dinner and overnight.
Volcanoes, Caves & Stone Animals
After breakfast, head toward the Ollagüe Volcano lookout point, one of Bolivia’s few still-active volcanoes, rising to 5,840 m.
Continue to the fascinating Galaxy Cave, where remarkable rock formations were created around 225 million years ago, when the area was covered by an ancient sea and the Thunupa Volcano met the ocean.
Next, explore Devil’s Cave, an archaeological site containing an ancient chullpar cemetery. Continue along the scenic “Stone Animals” road, where natural rock formations resemble animals, and cross the unique Campanitas Islands.
Return to Uyuni at approximately 5:30 PM, concluding your journey through the landscapes, geology, and ancient history of the Bolivian Altiplano.
