Private vs Shared Uyuni Salt Flats Tour from La Paz: How to Choose
Last updated: November 2026 · Written by the Andes 2 Amazon team in La Paz
Almost everyone who visits Bolivia wants to see the Uyuni Salt Flats, and most start the trip in La Paz. The first decision is simple: bus or flight. The second one is harder and matters more for your experience: a shared tour or a private tour? And which company should run it?
We have organized Uyuni trips from La Paz since 2012, so here is an honest guide to the differences, what to ask before you pay, and how our own Uyuni tours work.
Quick answer
- Choose a shared tour if you are traveling solo or on a budget, you enjoy meeting other travelers and you are happy with a fixed route and schedule.
- Choose a private tour if you are a couple, a family or friends traveling together, you want an English-speaking guide (not only a driver), you want to choose your own stops and photo time, or you are combining Uyuni with places like Sajama.
- Book with a La Paz-based operator if you want one company to handle the transfer to Uyuni, the tour and the return, instead of buying each piece separately.
Shared vs private Uyuni tour: the real differences
The vehicle
Uyuni tours run in 4x4 vehicles. On a shared tour you share the vehicle with other travelers you don't know — usually up to six passengers plus the driver — and several vehicles often move together along the same route. On a private tour the vehicle is only for your group.
The guide
This is the most common surprise. On many budget shared tours the driver is also the guide, and he may speak only Spanish. On our tours you have an English-speaking guide plus a local driver, so someone can explain what you are seeing — the salt, the geology, the communities — while the driver focuses on the road.
Schedule and stops
Shared tours follow a fixed program so the whole group stays together. A private tour lets you leave earlier for sunrise, stay longer for photos at Isla Incahuasi, add sunset or stargazing, or skip a stop that doesn't interest you.
Price
Shared tours are the cheapest way to see the salt flats. A private tour costs more per person, and the difference gets smaller the more people share the vehicle — for a family of four, a private 4x4 can be very good value.
Getting from La Paz to Uyuni
La Paz and Uyuni are about 550 km apart. You can take an overnight tourist bus (around 8–10 hours) or a flight of about one hour. We compare both in detail in La Paz to Uyuni: bus vs flight. If you are short on time, a tour that includes the flights saves you a lot of planning.
7 questions to ask any Uyuni tour company before you pay
- Is the 4x4 private or shared? Ask how many passengers will be in the vehicle.
- Who is the guide, and what language does he or she speak? Driver-only, Spanish-speaking driver-guide, or English-speaking guide plus driver?
- What exactly is included? Transport from La Paz, meals, accommodation, water, sleeping bags on multi-day trips.
- Which entrance fees are not included? Isla Incahuasi and the Eduardo Avaroa reserve charge separate fees — see our Uyuni entrance fees guide.
- What happens in the rainy season? From roughly December to March the mirror effect is spectacular, but some routes, like Isla Incahuasi, can close after heavy rain.
- How do you handle altitude? The salt flat is at about 3,650 m and the lagoons route goes higher. Ask about the pace and what to do if someone feels unwell — read our altitude sickness tips.
- Who runs the tour in Uyuni? Many agencies in La Paz resell tours from other companies. Ask who the local operator is and read recent reviews.

Frequently asked questions
Can I do Uyuni as a day trip from La Paz?
Yes, but only by flying. With morning and evening flights you can spend a full day on the salt flats and sleep in La Paz again. By bus you need at least two nights.
Is a private Uyuni tour worth it?
For couples, families and photographers, usually yes: you control the timing, you get an English-speaking guide and the vehicle is yours. Solo travelers on a tight budget often prefer shared tours.
When is the best time to visit?
Roughly December to March for the mirror effect after rain, and April to November for dry white salt, clear skies and easier access to all areas. Nights are very cold from June to August.
How far in advance should I book?
For July–August, Christmas and Easter, book flights and private tours several weeks ahead. In other months a week or two is usually enough.
